Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana has announced a suspension of its intended strike.
The strike, which was slated for today, Thursday, 23, 2021, was to demonstrate the Association’s misgivings about the E-levy.
The E-levy bill intends to impose a 1.75% levy on some electronic transactions, including mobile money transactions.
The Association had served notice of its intended strike action on Monday, December 20, 2021, describing the E-levy as retrogressive and inimical to their work.
But in an in an interview with CITI FM, General-Secretary for the Association indicated that the plan to remonstrate has been varied.
Leadership of the Association noted that the decision follows an engagement with the Ministry of Communications and the National Communications Authority.
According to Evans Otumfour, the General Secretary of the Association, said the decision to suspend the strike is to spare the public of the stress of not getting access to mobile money services, ahead of the yuletide.
He noted that the Ministry of Communications and National Communications Authority had impressed upon them to reconsider their decision to strike, especially in the Christmas season, where mobile money services will become critical.
‘‘We decided to reconsider our decision. That was why we called off our intended. That decision was not an easy one, though,’’ he stated.
