A Former Deputy Minister of Fisheries, HON. Nii Amasah Namoale has stated that secondary school education is not just about WASSCE results.
His comments were in response to the President’s Statement, at the Tamale Senior High School, on December 11, 2021.
Speaking at the well-attended 70th Anniversary of the Tamale Senior High School, President Nana Addo was quoted as having expressed satisfaction and pride over the successful implementation of the free secondary school education, despite some teething challenges.
Reports quotes the President as saying that despite the widespread criticism of the Free Senior High School policy, the policy has chalked some substantial successes.
President Nana Addo cited the WASSCE performance of 2020 and 2021 batches to underscore the success story of the Free SHS programme.
But speaking on Peace FM’s Evening Political Talk-show, the former Member of Parliament for Dade Kotopon constituency noted that secondary education should not be reduced to results of students.
He, however, commended President Nana Akuffo Addo for opening access to secondary education, by absorbing boarding and lodging costs for all students.
‘‘I commend Nana Addo. He has done well for adding free access, boarding and lodging. That is the only things he has added,’’ he stated.
He, however, contends that the government should desist from taking all the credit for the implementation of the policy, noting that the Free SHS policy was in existence before Nana Addo became President of Ghana.
‘‘Prior to this government, Electricity fees, Tuition, Sports fee, PTA fees and others, were free,’’ he posited.
