Agyekum Kufour at 83.

Former President, John Agyekum Kufour is 83 today.

The second president of the 4th republic has since been receiving several congratulatory messages from well-wishers, across Ghana.

The latest to add his voice to the myriad of celebratory messages is Prez. Nana Addo Danquah-Addo.

He took to his Facebook page to announce, as follows: ‘‘Happy 83rd Birthday to my boss, the 2nd President of the 4th Republic, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor.’’

Born on December 08, 1938, John Agyekum Kufour served as the Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya in the Second (1969–72) and Third (1979–81) Republics.

Known as the gentle giant, former President Kufour has been credited with numerous development initiatives in the country. Some social interventions such as Free Maternal Care and National Health Insurance,

He also started Microfinance and small loans program (MASLOC) – a US$50 million fund that makes micro loans available to the productive population – and introduced the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Program (LEAP), which provides direct cash transfers to poor households in the country who could not support themselves.

He is widely respected for his statesmanship, patriotism and soft-spoken nature.

His Foundation, the Agyekum Kufour Foundation, provides though-leadership training in leadership and governance.

Post-presidency ,Kufour has served on numerous international projects.
