Persons working at various toll booths have expressed grave dissatisfaction with the decision of the government to suspend their operations, without proper prior notices.
‘’Most of us are disabled. Is it a crime to be disabled? How can the government suspend our operations without proper notice,’’ one of the workers lamented.
The workers are also demanding that their two months outstanding salaries be paid.
‘‘We have not been paid in months. Some salaries are outstanding. If the government has no plan of reassignment, we demand that our outstanding salaries be paid immediately,’’ another worker demanded.
‘‘What has happened is very unfortunate. We know that the budget, which should give effect for this directive, has not yet been approved. Why do you go ahead and tell i=us to vacate our posts? We need our work. We want to work, ‘’a visibly aggrieved worker pontificated.
It is recalled the Ministry of Roads and Highways, had directed that the operation of road tolls be suspended.
This follows what the Ministry describe as chaotic scenes reported at some toll booths in the country following the Minister of Finance budget proposal to have toll booth scrapped.
The Ministry, in a statement also justified that the move will ease traffic and contribute meaningfully to economic activities in the country.
